Omar Minaya and Scott Boras were finally able to shake hands this off season, though I dont think this is what suffering Met fans had in mind. Alex Cora gets $2m for 2009. Cora made $2m in 2007 and $2m in 2008. At 34 years old, he couldnt expect much of a pay raise, even though he had a career high .371 obp in limited playing time (152 at bats) in 2008. Cora will serve as a somewhat expensive utility infielder for the Mets and will back up Luis Castillo at 2B.
Despite all of the talk about how the market is holding up for premium free agents but difficult on 2nd and 3rd tier players, Boras again is able to secure solid paychecks for his clients. Cora is a career 245/313/348 hitter, playing past his prime years. $2m is an excellent contract.
